The XQ.EUJOY consortium, comprising Octaedro, Dataninja, and Fundació Periodisme Plural, joined forces with Idea Dinamica at this year’s Forum of Mediterranean Women Journalists. Their panel discussion, held on November 26th at the University of Bari, explored how journalism can evolve into a powerful pedagogical tool to enhance media literacy and foster critical citizenship across Europe.
Why focus on journalism as an educational tool for young people? The XQ.EUJOY project challenges the common adult-centric narratives that often cast youth as disengaged or indifferent to societal issues. The project’s mission is to reframe journalism as a medium that connects with young audiences, using innovative strategies to make news a tool for education and empowerment. By recognising young people as key stakeholders in societal transformation, XQ.EUJOY underscores the potential of media to bridge gaps in understanding and promote inclusive and decolonised narratives.
“The reality is that young people are deeply involved in issues that matter to them, such as social justice, sustainability, gender equality, and mental health,” explained Paula Estalayo, XQ.EUJOY’s Project Coordinator. “Through this initiative, we aim to empower youth as active, critical, and responsible agents of change, capable of envisioning and building a more just, sustainable, and inclusive future.”
